Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Review

Rating: 6.6

If the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 had come along 6 months ago, we probably would have crowned it the best little netbook around. But after having seen the likes of the Eee PC 1000H and the HP Mini 1001TU, the Lenovo comes off looking a little second-best.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 (White) Review

Rating: 7

Lenovo`s "me, too!" entry in the Netbook sweepstakes, the IdeaPad S10, gets the price and features right, but falls behind on battery life. With impressive battery scores from Lenovo`s mainstream laptops, we had high hopes for the S10`s battery, even though it`s of the smaller 3-cell variety. Unfortunately, the battery lasted about as long as other 3-cell Netbooks we`ve tested, such as the MSI Wind, coming in at 2 hours and 13 minutes on our video playback battery drain test. Dell manages to get more than 3 hours out of the Mini 9`s 4-cell battery, while Netbooks with 6-cell batteries, including the Asus Eee PC 1000, lasted for more than 5 hours.

INDUSTRY REVIEW

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 - Small idea leads to big things.

Rating: 8.5

Look out world: it`s another netbook. This one comes courtesy of Lenovo, and it`s definitely a winner. It runs Windows XP, has a 10in screen, a conventional (spinning) hard drive, weighs 1.3kg, and is quite easy to use. It costs $699, so it`s not too expensive — which is just as well in the current economic climate. The S10 is a refined netbook that possesses good looks and solid construction. It`s easy to use and perfect for travellers and students who don`t want to cart around more than 1.4kg (including the power adapter).

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Review

Rating: 7

More than half a dozen mini-notebooks are currently available with identical 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processors and Windows XP Home operating systems. With so few differences between competing models, any innovation—a stylish look, a better keyboard, a bundled piece of software, or even an extra port—becomes paramount. Lenovo’s first foray into the netbook space has some nice touches: a stylish and compact chassis, full-featured back-up software, a speedy hard drive, and a screen with great viewing angles. Unfortunately, it also has a smaller keyboard and touchpad than its 10-inch rivals. At $449, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 is within $30 of the street price for the three-cell MSI Wind ($479 street) and comparable to the six-cell ASUS Eee PC 1000H. Consumers who want the most compact and stylish 10-inch netbook on the market will look past these flaws and snap up the S10. But those who need long battery life should look elsewhere or hold out for an S10 with a six-cell battery.

Lenovo S10 — The Best Netbook We`ve Seen All Year

Rating: 9

There are no huge surprises to be found in the IdeaPad S10, but the machine impresses at every turn. It`s pint-sized, light (2.7 pounds), and bereft of big power, featuring the now-standard 1.6-GHz Atom CPU and 1 GB of RAM. But dig deeper and you`ll find a series of impressive upgrades over the competition: The most visible is a 10.2-inch LCD vs. the 8.9-inch screen that`s become the norm on mini-notes. Another modest upgrade puts a 160-GB hard drive at your disposal, the largest among all netbooks we`ve seen.
